A surprise pole sitter has emerged at Monza, as Pierre Gasly piloted his Alpine to his first career pole position. The Frenchman edged out George Russell by less than a tenth of a second to claim the top spot.

Oscar Piastri continued his strong weekend by putting his McLaren third, but he will drop three places on the starting grid after being penalized for impeding Liam Lawson during Q2. Despite the penalty, Piastri will still start ahead of his teammate, Lando Norris.

The home heroes will start from the second row, with Charles Leclerc taking third and Lewis Hamilton lining up fourth. Both Ferrari drivers narrowly made it through Q2 before delivering strong final qualifying performances in front of the home crowd.

Arvid Lindblad and Franco Colapinto also broke into the top 10, continuing what has been an impressive weekend for both drivers.

Alpine's Surprise Pace

The biggest surprise of the weekend has been Alpine. The team has shown incredible pace around Monza, with Gasly claiming his maiden pole and Colapinto qualifying an impressive seventh.

Alpine now has a legitimate chance of fighting for the win tomorrow.

Gasly will also have history on his side. The Frenchman famously claimed his maiden Formula 1 victory at Monza in 2020, and he will now return to the front of the grid at the same circuit five years later.
