George Russell and Mercedes set the pace at Albert Park, with teammate Kimi Antonelli completing a front-row sweep for the Silver Arrows, their first of the season. Russell was untouchable throughout qualifying, topping Q1, Q2, and Q3 on his way to pole position.
Q1 Debrief
Three drivers failed to set a time in the opening session. Lance Stroll and Carlos Sainz never left the garage, while four-time world champion Max Verstappen found the barriers in Turn 1 on his first push lap. Despite ongoing reliability concerns for Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso managed to post a competitive time and advance. Cadillac successfully completed the team’s first-ever qualifying session, finishing 18th and 19th.
Q2 Debrief
The second session ran uninterrupted under green. Russell continued to showcase Mercedes’ speed, while reigning world champion Lando Norris struggled to match the pace of his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri. Both Alpine and Haas drivers were eliminated in Q2, along with Alex Albon and Nico Hulkenberg. After the checkered flag, drama struck as Gabriel Bortoleto’s Audi suffered a failure at pit entry. He was forced to stop and be pushed back to the garage. Although he had advanced to Q3, his qualifying session was effectively over.
Q3 Debrief
Q3 began with a delay, and further drama followed once the session got underway. Cooling components from Antonelli’s Mercedes became dislodged and scattered across the circuit. One piece landed on the racing line and was subsequently run over by Norris’ McLaren, bringing out the red flag. When the session resumed, Mercedes once again proved dominant. Russell secured pole position, with Antonelli locking out the front row to complete a commanding performance for the team.
